FARNBOROUGH – ROYALTY AND COMMONER

St Peter’s Church dates back to Norman times and has a wooden porch of the 1500s along with a wooden tower and gallery built in the 1700s. Among the well-preserved wall-paintings, it is ironic that one depicts St Eugenie – the only such in the country. The Empress Eugenie is buried nearby in St Michael’s Abbey, along with her son and husband. She had it built as a mausoleum, as befitted the resting-place of Napoleon 111 of France.

The Tumbledown Dick was once the focal point of the village and is a former pub dating back to the 16th century. It is reputed to have been associated with Richard Cromwell; the son of Oliver who succeeded him for a brief and inglorious spell as Lord Protector.

Wooden floorboards in the kitchen – a good idea?

Wood flooring is now often seen within every room of the home, including the kitchen. Hardwood is always a popular choice, but what about wooden floorboards?

Wooden floorboards can work in the kitchen, but you do need to prepare them and keep them maintained. Below we share what you need to know about using floorboards in your kitchen.

Problems due to water damage

One huge consideration if you plan to use your floorboards in the kitchen is that of water and moisture. Water and wood really do not mix, so you really have to be on top of the plumbing, and to clear up any spills as quickly as possible. If all gaps between floorboards have been sealed, and the floor has been properly varnished, then this shouldn’t pose a problem.

Wood does change over time

The appearance of your wooden floorboards will change over time, with the wood inevitably turning a darker shade. Wood is also more easily dented and stained. If you want a rustic looking floor with bags of character, then floorboards in the kitchen will work for you.

The importance of sanding

Before the floorboards can be sealed it is important that they are thoroughly sanded. Sanding wooden floorboards is best done with a dust free floor sanding machine, so that you have a perfectly smooth and dust free surface on which to apply the varnish and sealant. Sanding and sealing floorboards is probably best undertaken by a specialist floor sanding company.

It's all in the finish

Floorboards in the kitchen environment need to be protected not only from general wear and tear, but also from potential water spills. The best type of finish is that of polyurethane, that gives a clear yet tough protective coating. You can also use an oil based finish, but if you have young children, and a washing machine in the kitchen, then you are better off using a polyurethane based varnish.

Wooden floorboards in the kitchen are truly beautiful. They are attractive, add much needed warmth to the room, and can help to increase the value of your property. The true beauty is that you can also apply more varnish, or repaint them, in years to come.
